Training the Best

Founded on the principle of providing a high-quality, scientific education to aspiring dentists, Tufts University School of Dental Medicine has been an pedagogical innovator, developing new courses, technologies, and partnerships to ensure that TUSDM students receive rigorous, hands-on instruction that prepares them for real world clinical practice.

Pushing the Boundary

After streamlining its curriculum and training programs, the School of Dental Medicine added a strong research component in the first decades of the twentieth century. Enabled by new resources and encouraged by higher institutional expectations, Tufts faculty, students, and alumni conducted studies that helped revolutionize dental practice.

Groundbreakers

Expertise, empathy and passion drive the people of the Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. From the forward-thinking professionals who envisioned a higher standard for dental care in the nineteenth century to the individuals who revolutionized it in the twentieth, generations of TUSDM faculty and alumni have been on the cutting edge of oral health care in the United States and across the globe.

From the Local to the Global

TUSDM professionals began providing free dental care to children and struggling members of the Boston community early in the twentieth century. Through partnerships with institutions like the Forsyth Institute, the Boston Floating Hospital, and later, the New England Medical Center, the School of Dental Medicine gave its students practical experience while delivering vital care to needy communities. Decades later, TUSDM faculty, students, and alumni extended this legacy of care to communities across the globe.

And into the future

As we celebrate the School of Dental Medicine’s sesquicentennial, we reflect on the principles, legacies, and people that have shaped our history. Help us turn the legacies of our institution into the future of our profession.

For the past 150 years, we have been dedicated to providing comprehensive education, promoting cutting-edge research, and building a community of professionals within Tufts that reaches the local, regional, and global community around us. From this firm foundation, we are able to reach further and dream bigger than Isaac Wetherbee ever thought possible. With the support and vision of our alumni and friends, we will continue as global leaders in oral health for the next 150 years (or more) into the future.
